Avery Point SCUBA Diving

Avery Point is located on the eastern shore of the Thames River right where the river meets the ocean. It's a fairly shallow site, about 12' deep max, with rocky and sandy bottom composition. The best time to dive here is at slack due to currents. Pull into the parking lot on Rita Santa Croce drive and go to the far end. You will see a staircase that allows entry into the water. It's a very rocky entry so stay to the right and work your way out to waist deep water and put your fins on there. Head straight into the river until you hit the rock line at about 12' and follow the rock line on a heading of about 180 degrees. Definitely watch for currents and don't go too far out or it will be a long swim back.

CDNN :: Scuttle Calypso as Scuba Diving Reef to End Cousteau Family Feud?: "Nine years after the commander's death, the ship has fallen victim to a bitter family feud and its chances of a new life as a museum or research centre let alone taking to the sea again appear to be receding into the depths.
'We had an expert's report done recently and they said it was no longer a question of repairing the boat, but of rebuilding it,' said Marc Parnaudeau, who is in charge of the Calypso dossier at the La Rochelle town hall."

CDNN :: Asphyxia led to scuba diver's death

CDNN :: Asphyxia led to scuba diver's death: " A scuba diver who was found dead in the pool at Thunder Reef Divers on Monday ran out of air while using a rebreather, a highly technical device that allows divers to breathe the gases in their equipment over and over.
Harvey L. Harris, 51, died of accidental drowning due to asphyxia, Don Phillips, an investigator for the Clark County medical examiner, said Friday.
If a rebreathing system isn't working properly, the diver can breathe too much carbon dioxide and too little oxygen, lose consciousness and drown, Phillips said."

Blue Grotto, popular recreation spot, offered at auction - OrlandoSentinel.com: State News

Blue Grotto, popular recreation spot, offered at auction - OrlandoSentinel.com: State News: "WILLISTON -- The deep, clear, refreshing waters of Blue Grotto, which have lured Tiger Woods, the prince of Thailand and thousands of other divers, was offered at auction Thursday to a pool of potential investors who were considering a riskier plunge.

But the top bid of $1.5 million fell 'considerably' short of the price owner Edward Paradiso sought, and he immediately exercised his right to refuse it, said Tommy Bone, vice president of the National Auction Group, which arranged the sale at the water's edge.

Blue Grotto, in Levy County about 25 miles northwest of Ocala, is the largest clear-water cavern in the state and reputed to be among the best scuba-dive locations in Florida. Water in the 100-foot-deep cavern is 72 degrees no matter the season or depth."
