CDNN :: Asphyxia led to scuba diver's death: " A scuba diver who was found dead in the pool at Thunder Reef Divers on Monday ran out of air while using a rebreather, a highly technical device that allows divers to breathe the gases in their equipment over and over.
Harvey L. Harris, 51, died of accidental drowning due to asphyxia, Don Phillips, an investigator for the Clark County medical examiner, said Friday.
If a rebreathing system isn't working properly, the diver can breathe too much carbon dioxide and too little oxygen, lose consciousness and drown, Phillips said."

Blue Grotto, popular recreation spot, offered at auction - OrlandoSentinel.com: State News: "WILLISTON -- The deep, clear, refreshing waters of Blue Grotto, which have lured Tiger Woods, the prince of Thailand and thousands of other divers, was offered at auction Thursday to a pool of potential investors who were considering a riskier plunge.
But the top bid of $1.5 million fell 'considerably' short of the price owner Edward Paradiso sought, and he immediately exercised his right to refuse it, said Tommy Bone, vice president of the National Auction Group, which arranged the sale at the water's edge.
Blue Grotto, in Levy County about 25 miles northwest of Ocala, is the largest clear-water cavern in the state and reputed to be among the best scuba-dive locations in Florida. Water in the 100-foot-deep cavern is 72 degrees no matter the season or depth."

CBS News | 'Scuba Santa' Swims With Sharks | December 12, 2005?12:33:26: "Lots of people have had their pictures taken with Santa Claus at the mall. But in Kentucky, folks line up in a very different place for those photos: the Newport Aquarium.
Visitors of all ages come to see the man they call 'Scuba Santa' (video) cavort with sharks and other sea creatures in the aquarium's shark tank.
Many of the visitors back up against the tank's glass and have their picture taken as Scuba Santa comes up front, making it seem almost as if they're in the tank with him. "

Reuters AlertNet - Mexican divers try to fix storm-wracked coral reef
Reuters AlertNet - Mexican divers try to fix storm-wracked coral reef: "Mexican scuba divers are struggling in surging seas to repair one of the world's biggest coral reefs after it was badly damaged by Hurricane Wilma last month.
Buffeted by strong currents, it takes three divers to hold broken chunks of coral in place and tie them down with plastic straps that are tricky to fasten even above the surface.
After an hour of silent underwater work in Mexico's turquoise Caribbean waters, several pieces of the fragile coral gardens are back in place."

Solomon Is. To Block Kerzner Dolphin Import
Solomon Is. To Block Kerzner Dolphin Import: "The government sent a team to the Solomon Islands to inspect a facility from which Kerzner International plans to bring in a pod of dolphins, but it looks like that export will never happen.
The owner of the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is developing a new dolphin attraction facility as part of the resort?s Phase III expansion, but a law passed in parliament recently prevents dolphins from being taken out of Bahamian waters.
It means that Kerzner will have to bring the friendly mammals in, but at this point it?s not clear where the company will get them from.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Thursday that the Solomons government said it has never changed its decision to ban exporting dolphins.
The report said the ban on the export of live dolphins from Solomon Islands is due to be officially legalised and the permanent secretary of Fisheries confirmed that it was do to be gazetted this week.
It was also reported that international environmental groups have threatened to ban the import of tuna from the Solomon Islands if more dolphins are exported.
Kerzner International has had little to say on the issue, except that its dolphin attraction facility is in the planning stage and international reports on the planned import are inaccurate.
Earlier in the week Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries V. Alfred Gray said that he was satisfied that the facility where the dolphins are being kept in the Solomon Islands are up to standard and he said once the mammals are transported to the Kerzner facility in The Bahamas 'they would not even know where they are', meaning they would also be well cared for at the Kerzner facility.
The World Society for the Protection of Animals blew the whistle on the planned import, saying that it was illegal under international law and pointing to the Solomons ban. "

HighWire Press -- Medline Abstract
HighWire Press -- Medline Abstract: "Worldwide, more than 1000 scuba (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) diving injuries per year requiring hyperbaric recompression are documented. Approximately 80 to 90 fatalities per year are reported in North America. On average, there were 16 diving injuries requiring hyperbaric recompression therapy in scuba divers aged 19 years and younger in North America between 1988 and 2002. The youngest injured diver was 11 years old, and the youngest fatality was 14 years old during this time period. In the year 2000, certifying recreational scuba diving organizations lowered the minimum age to 8 from age 12 years for participation in the sport. We report a case of a highly trained adolescent scuba diver who, despite having advanced diving certifications, had 2 separate episodes of diving-related injuries requiring hyperbaric recompression therapy. A discussion of medical considerations in the care of the child and adolescent scuba diver is included."
